Vice-Rector for Science and Research honored excellent doctoral students

On Thursday, November 6, 36 doctoral students and their supervisors or consultants received the Vice-Rector for Research Award for excellent results in doctoral studies at Masaryk University. From our Department of Chemistry, Matúš Chvojka and his supervisors Vladimír Šindelář and Hennie Valkenier Matúš Chvojka graduated from the Faculty of Science in the Chemistry program, specializing in Organic Chemistry. He focused on diseases caused by dysfunctional channels in cell membranes, such as cystic fibrosis. He developed a new type of transport compounds to replace nonfunctional proteins in patients, opening new possibilities for targeted therapies.

Alfred Bader Prizes 2025

Dr. Tomáš Fiala has received the Alfred Bader Prize for Bioorganic and Bioinorganic Chemistry 2025.
This prestigious award, awarded in cooperation with the Czech Chemical Society and the Bader Philanthropies Foundation, founded by Alfred Bader, founder of Aldrich Chemicals, is intended for Czech chemists under the age of 35. The award includes a lecture by the laureate at the annual conference “Liblice – Advances in Organic, Bioorganic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry”.

Tomáš Fiala from the Department of Chemistry Receives Prestigious MASH StG/CoG Grant

Masaryk University has awarded nine internal MUNI Award in Science and Humanities (MASH) grants in a new category—MASH StG/CoG—through its Grant Agency of Masaryk University (GAMU). This category is specifically aimed at supporting early-career researchers who plan to apply for European Research Council (ERC) Starting or Consolidator Grants. Among the recipients is Tomáš Fiala from the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science.

Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition 2025

At the international Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition 2025, which took place from March 26 to 30 in Beijing, a student of the Šlapanice Gymnasium, Olivie Maya Matyasková, achieved an extraordinary result. She worked on her scientific project “Diels-Alder reaction of new benzoquinones” at the Department of Chemistry in the research group of Assoc. Prof. Kamil Paruch. She placed in the gold zone (First Prize) and also took home the second prize from the prestigious Yanqi Innovation Competition. Congratulations!

Vice-rector's award for excellent results in doctoral studies 2024

Dr. Petr Macháč is a graduate of the doctoral study program of Chemistry, and last week, he was awarded the Vice-rector's award for excellent results in doctoral studies. Using a wide range of methods, Petr investigated the porosity and thermal stability of porous materials and their potential synthesis for applications in catalytic chemistry. With his supervisor, prof. Jiří Pinkas from our Department of Chemistry received the award from Vice-rector prof. Pospíšilová.

Jean-Marie Lehn Prize for Chemistry 2024

On June 28, 2024, the French Embassy in the Czech Republic announced the results of the 30th edition of the Jean-Marie Lehn Prize for Chemistry competition for doctoral students and recent doctoral graduates. The third place was taken by our recent graduate Petr Macháč for his research "Synthesis and characterization of catalysts." The special prize of the Czech Chemical Society was also received by our recent graduate Helena Hrušková for the work "Micro- and mezzo-fluidic instrumentation for the enrichment of biological samples". Congratulations!

Dean’s Awards 2024

Dean Tomáš Kašparovský has presented awards to the best students of the MU Faculty of Science. This year’s Dean’s Awards were presented to a total of ten laureates in the Best Student category in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme, and to eleven promising scientists in the Best Student category of the Doctoral study programme. Moreover, the award was also presented to three teams of fourteen outstanding students of the pregraduate and postgraduate programmes. Awarded students from the Department of Chemistry were Bc. Leoš Sáblík, Mgr. Matúš Chvojka and a team of students who organize ViBuCh Educational i-course for future chemists. Congratulations to all the winners!

Brno announces its PhD talents for 2023

We would like to share the great news from the Brno PhD Talent Competition, which already knows its winners. In this year's competition, Kateřina Hrůzová, PhD student at the Department of Chemistry, succeeded. The competition is aimed at students in the first year of doctoral studies carried out in the city of Brno. Its main goal is to support young scientists in their study and scientific endeavors. MUNI SCIENTIST AWARD 2023

The most successful scientists or research teams of Masaryk University have been awarded the MUNI SCIENTIST AWARD 2023 for their significant achievements, publication in prestigious journals and research results. This year, GAMU awarded 37 excellent scientists or research teams. More than thirty researchers personally attended the awards ceremony in the refectory of the Mendel Museum. Awardees from the Department of Chemistry were Mgr. Jakub Švenda, Ph.D. for an article published in Angewandte Chemie and doc. RNDr. Mgr. Jozef Hritz, Ph.D. for receiving the prestigious Excellence Hubs grant.

Dr. Josef Kučera is a graduate of the doctoral study program of Chemistry. Currently, he works as a postdoc in the research group of prof. Lenka Hernychová from the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute. He was awarded Vice-rector's award for excellent results in doctoral studies. With his supervisor doc. Petr Táborský from our Department of Chemistry received the award from Vice-rector prof. Pospíšilová.

A new mechanism regulating RNA splicing was discovered by a team led by Dalibor Blazek

The scientific journal NATURE has just published the discovery of the research team led by Dalibor Blazek from CEITEC MU that describes a previously unknown mechanism regulating RNA splicing – an essential process for the control of gene expression. Labs of Kamil Paruch from the Department of Chemistry at Masaryk Universitycontributed by performing the chemical-biology characterization of OTS964.

Our Spin-off CasInvent Pharma Raises €1.3 Million from Foreign Investors

A unique investment has been made in the university spin-off company CasInvent Pharma, which is developing compounds with anticancer properties. The KHAN Technology Transfer Fund I and i&i Biotech Fund invested €1.3 million in the company. With this funding, CasInvent Pharma will be strengthening the development and preclinical testing of a compound for the treatment of leukaemia.

Excellent evaluation by GACR for SCI MUNI research

A three-year project on the development of thermoelectric materials with high efficiency and especially on the study of their long-term operational stability was evaluated as excellent by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GACR). The MU Faculty of Science team was led by Pavel Brož, who undertook the study alongside a team from the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS), led by Jiří Buršík, and colleagues from the University of Vienna. Congratulations!

Scientists from the Faculty of Science win the MUNI Innovation Award

During the recent Business Research Forum, Masaryk University (MU) presented its new MUNI Innovation Award for innovative achievement for the first time. Among the awardees was Kamil Paruch from Dept. of Chemistry with Vítězslav Bryjaand Pavlína Janovská (both Dept.of Experimental Biology) for unique research in the field of casein kinase 1 inhibition, which included the synthesis of new highly selective and patentable compounds. The work led to the establishment of the university spin-off company CasInvent Pharma, the main aim of which is to bring selected compounds up to the clinical trial stage. Congratulations!

University Spin-Off to Focus on Developing New Cancer Drugs

A new spin-off company, CasInvent Pharma, a.s., has been established by Masaryk University (MU) in cooperation with its investment partner, i&i Prague, s.r.o. (Ltd), in order to facilitate further development of new compounds that could be used to treat certain types of leukaemia, lymphoma and solid tumours. The company will test the compounds that inhibit the enzyme Casein Kinase 1 (CK1) which is responsible, among other things, for the migration of leukaemia cells into lymphoid organs.
